All About The Special Needs Class at UDA

The Special Needs dance program at UDA is designed for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities such as down syndrome, (ASD) autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and other developmental delays (including those requiring use of a wheelchair).  Our goal is to enrich the lives of these children through the exploration of movement and dance concepts in a safe and structured environment.

Our classes are offered to enrich the special needs community through the art of dance! We offer this to any individual with physical or developmental disabilities. The Special Needs curriculum is constructed in a unique way to benefit the students according to their needs.

Each class consists of the following exercises:

  • Roll Call and Socialization (increase pragmatic skills)
  • Warm-Up with Locomotor Movement (increase spatial awareness)
  • Across the Floor Movements Solo or With Group (increase gross motor skills, patience, teamwork, and cooperation)
  • Choreography (tap, ballet, or jazz fundamentals)
  • Creative Movement (increase creativity, self expression, and self esteem)
  • Closing Activity (build community within the class, students, and teachers)
  • UDA’s annual Special Needs Dance Recital (see video below)

All Classes are Held at the South Jordan Location

All About The Autism Movement Therapy Class at UDA

What is AMT?
  • It is a community outreach dance program that serves the autism and special education community.
  • Strengthens both the left and right hemispheres of the brain by combining patterning, visual movement, auditory processing, rhythm, tempo, and sequence.
  • AMT is not just for autism, but any child needing to build stronger speech articulation, behavioral, academic, social, or motor skills.
  • Largest discovery of AMT was that children with challenged speech and language/communication skills have made substantial progress with pragmatics of language and actual speech articulation.
